New Orleans' Mardi Gras, arguably the largest annual revelry in the USA, is rolling full steam ahead this weekend, barely 10 months after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank off Louisiana's coast, killing 11 crewmembers and sparking the mammoth spill. Oil company BP was leasing the rig and has assumed responsibility for its aftermath.
Mardi Gras is Tuesday. Some worried that the oil spill would deter visitors from flocking to New Orleans just as hotel bookings were rebounding from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 — but the spill hasn't seemed to discourage the partying, tourism and city leaders say. Mild weather and a late Mardi Gras the event's exact date changes each year coinciding with college spring break is drawing big crowds.
